Getting to know Vasculitis

  by Mariel Aglipay

Vasculitis is a general term for a group of diseases that involve inflammation in blood vessels according to the John Hopkins Vasculitis Center. It may indicate problems with the liver, kidney, lungs or heart. It manifests itself as ulcers in internal organs but more often the skin. The cure for it is trial and error which differs from person to person. One commonality with this disease is that oral steroids are used to treat it.
Taking steroids is unlike regular medicines which you can take whenever you need to, it has to be taken in moderation and has to be tapered down in order to stop. This can take from weeks, months and even years to finish.

One problem most vasculitis patients have is often attributed to the side effects of steroids. Some of the side effects of steroids are being moon-faced, increased appetite, mood swings, styrae (red stretch marks), increased body hair, falling hair (scalp), and not to mention the extra care a vasculitis patients has to have when dressing wounds. These side effects also differ from person to person.

Although little is known about vasculitis it is considered as a generic disease, almost comparable to fever which can be a symptom to more serious illness. John Hopkins center in America is a dedicated medical center who is studying this disease. The study of this disease in the country is limited and can be brain-wrecking to find a cure. Here are some tips if you are vasculitis patient:

  1. Have a support group - Compared to the earlier years when vasculitis was relatively new there were not any support groups available. Now these support groups are growing in numbers, usually found online. These groups share their experiences with vasculitis with each other. Sharing your experiences with vasculitis not only helps you get through it but also add to the pool of knowledge about vasculitis for researchers.
  2. Keep a journal - This can help both you and your doctor to monitor your condition.
  3. Research - Keep yourself informed with the latest discoveries about the disease. Ask your doctor if there are any new treatments available for your illness. Knowing more means your doing your part in the healing process.
  4. Get a second opinion - Vasculitis is complicated disease that cannot be diagnosed at one go. Consult a rheumatologist. This disease is often linked to arthritis and other similar rheumatologic disease. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
  5. Be Optimistic -  Nothing beats a positive outlook to speed up the healing process. Believe that there is a cure for the disease and most of all
  6. Pray - God will be with you throughout the whole ordeal. This is a test God gave you because he knows you can handle it.

MC Thesis Defense

  by Marz Aglipay

September 10, 2011 - Mass Communication students crowd the halls of the SP buildings anxious for their go at their one-time-big time shot at convincing their respective panels that they are worthy of receiving a passing grade for their undergraduate thesis studies.

Students were advised to be in their best uniforms or wear their lucky underwear, whichever works for them best. Some even came up with their own gimmicks which went with accord to their thesis topics. By 8:00 A.M. the first in-line for defense in their respective thesis panels and ended by 3:00P.M.

Mass Communication department garnered a number of 12-balls or a total of 100% on their thesis papers. “I did not expect to get 12 balls” said Mycka Batocabe one of the students who were given 12 balls for their thesis. She had phoned her parents after their thesis defense and her partner Angela Bautista was in tears out of sheer joy.

Despite the many success stories of the day one group of panel whose members are Mr. Real So, Atty. Agustin Aldea, and Ms. Monina Bello, being the panel chairperson. They’ve accommodated their last thesis pair by 8:00P.M. “I was sure my mother didn’t believe I was still doing my thesis defense at that time” said Charlotte Baroga who was the last pair to defend their paper.

What was difficult for this panel’s students was that most of them were asked to make major revisions which needed to happen within a week’s time while some of them were scheduled for re-defense. “Our thesis had a lot of red marks” said Jelene Sulit a student who was assigned to Ms. Bello’s panel group. Despite the short notice for revisions and representation which happened a week after the day of the defense Sulit’s group came out all smiles with 12 balls. Looking back at the experience she says “It is the biggest hurdle I had to over-come this semester”.

This year’s sportsfest got Paulinians working up a sweat. The major games being basketball and volleyball games eliminations started early August. The games held on Sportsfest week were all championship games except for a couple of games which determined who would make it into the finals on the last day of the sportsfest week.

New additions to the minor games line-up are chess and Scrabble replacing tug-o’-war and obstacle relay. For the swimming events, it was held in campus this year after the re-opening of the swimming pool in front of the newly erected canteen. The same swimming events were held except for the relay. The Mass Communication Society took home two gold medals from this event.

The events were concluded on Friday September 23, with its highlight being the cheering competition.  Compared to last year each performance was shortened to 5 minutes leaving enough time for the awarding for athletes. Performances by the college students varied with their respective themes. The Tourism went with an indigenous inspired performance, the Psychology Society with a tin soldier look, the mass communication society sporting a “who-run-the-world” angst to their performance.

For the cheering competition the Psychology society got 2nd place, the Mass Communication Society 1st and the champion was the Nursing Society. The Mass Communication Society was awarded as the Best PEP squad for always being present and supportive of their team.

For the major games the society landed itself in 3rd place in basketball and 2nd place in the volleyball in the women’s division. Elaiza Cabuag and Diane Sumulong were among the Mythical 6 of women’s volleyball. Elaiza Cabuag was also awarded as part of the Mythical 5 in basketball women’s division. But the this year’s biggest award goes to the HRM Society who garnered the most wins in both majors sports making them Over-all Champion.

This goes to show that this is a very promising year for the Mass Communication society. It proved that they are strong contenders in the area of sports. The mass comm. students make it look as easy as having bacons for breakfast.
